Facebook Fundraisers

Facebook Fundraisers makes it easy for people to show their respect and affection for your loved one, especially for memorial brain donations (i.e. donations in lieu of flowers) to Brain Support Network.

If you make a donation directly to BSN (e.g. by credit card or check), BSN will send you a receipt for your charitable contribution.  Receipts for donations made through Facebook Fundraisers are sent by Facebook and BSN is not aware of the names of donors or the individual amounts donated.

Generally, BSN’s first indication of the existence of a Facebook Fundraiser is a transfer to our bank account, typically days or weeks after the fundraiser has closed.  Therefore, please tell us about your fundraiser by sending email to [email protected]. Otherwise, we won’t know whom to thank.

Fundraisers are created in Facebook over three screens:

  1. Let’s start with the basics
  2. Tell your story
  3. Pick a cover photo

1. Let’s start with the basics

On this first screen it’s imperative to correctly select “Brain Support Network”.  If you type in the first seven letters of our name, BSN will appear. We recommend that you choose an amount of $500 which approximates the average cost to BSN of organizing a brain donation—and the price of paying forward the next family’s brain donation.

2. Tell your story

On this first screen we encourage you to talk about your loved one whose brain was donated to support the search for treatments and cures for neurological disorders.  If you want to talk about BSN, following are a few candidate paragraphs. You can copy and paste this text from this page into the “Why are you raising money?” text box on the Facebook site.  If you start with our text, don’t forget to personalize the text by replacing the text between the angle brackets (<>) that is highlighted below in yellow. (When you paste this text into the Facebook site, the yellow highlighting will disappear, but the angle brackets will remain,)

Want to join me in supporting a good cause? I’m raising money for Brain Support Network to honor <name of honoree> and your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate $5 or $500. Every little bit helps. Thank you for your support. I’ve included information about Brain Support Network (BSN) below.

BSN is dedicated to the support of families dealing with neurodegenerative disorders including the four atypical parkinsonian disorders (and related): Lewy Body Dementia (LBD/DLB), Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), and Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD/CBS).  These disorders are sometimes diagnosed as “atypical parkinsonism” or “Parkinson’s Plus.” Other, more prevalent neurological disorders with overlapping symptoms include Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), and vascular dementia.

The activity for which BSN is known nationwide is brain donation.  At present, post-mortem brain tissue analysis is the *only* way to confirm a diagnosis of any neurological disorder.  BSN has helped over 500 families accomplish brain donation in the US and Canada. Of these families, *half* received a confirmed diagnosis that was different than the clinical diagnosis.

<name of honoree> was diagnosed with <name of disorder>.  <His/Her> brain was donated to <Mayo Clinic?> as a result of the work performed by BSN employees and volunteers.  Your donation makes possible their continued work to support the search for treatments and cures for neurological disorders.  For more information visit www.brainsupportnetwork.org/brain-donation.

3. Pick a cover photo

We recommend either a photo of your honoree or the BSN logo.  Click on “+” to see some candidate BSN logos including premade fundraiser banners or upload your own photo.

If we can help, send us email at [email protected]   We can usually get back to you the same day.
