This BBC News story of a man diagnosed with Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), resonated with me and members of our local Lewy body dementia (LBD) caregiver support group. The curious mix of symptoms in the face of continued cognitive abilities plus friends not realizing the person has dementia are both common in LBD.
In this story, the man can still speak French, German and Italian and “likes the challenge of translating Romanian.” The man notes that “half the time people don’t know I’ve got anything wrong with me.”
His wife reports that her husband was “becoming obsessive about his wallet, his spectacles and his phone. He needed to have them on him, and he would be desperate, even going to bed, if he didn’t have these three things.” She also noticed that he was walking more slowly. Her friends were telling her that she was “exaggerating, there’s nothing the matter.”
